Where Extroid works – and where it does not

Extroid lets you use your phone camera in browser-based video calls. It does not install a system-wide webcam driver, so native desktop apps work differently.

Best fit

Chromium-based desktop browser + Android phone + browser video call

Works as

A browser camera source named Extroid Camera

Does not work as

A system webcam for OBS, Zoom desktop, or other native desktop apps

Compatibility matrix

Treat this as the official support scope. Browser apps are the target. Native desktop apps need an operating-system camera driver, which Extroid does not install.

Why browser calls work

Extroid is a browser-native camera layer. That is why setup is lightweight, and also why the support scope is intentionally narrow.

Browser pages use MediaDevices

Browser-based video calls request cameras through browser APIs. Extroid can expose a camera option to compatible pages, so the meeting page can receive your phone video as Extroid Camera.

Desktop apps use system devices

Native apps like OBS or Zoom desktop usually look for cameras registered in the operating system. Extroid does not install a driver, so it does not appear as a system-wide webcam.

The phone side is a web app

The phone opens Extroid mobile from a QR link and shares its camera through a browser page. Android Chrome is the recommended mobile environment.

No cloud video relay

Extroid uses signaling only to pair devices. The video connection is peer-to-peer when the network allows it.

Use the browser version when possible

If a desktop app is unsupported, check whether the service has a browser version. For example, use Zoom Web instead of the native Zoom desktop app.

Connection checklist

Most setup problems come from permissions, WebView QR scanners, or local network behavior.

1
Use Chrome

Use a Chromium-based desktop browser and Android Chrome on your phone when possible.

2
Scan QR

If a QR scanner opens an embedded browser, choose «Open in Chrome» before allowing camera access.

3
Allow camera

Close other apps using the camera, then allow camera access on the phone.

4
Select Extroid

Open your browser call and choose Extroid Camera in camera settings.

Common questions

Does Extroid work in Zoom desktop?

No. Extroid works inside browser-based calls. Use Zoom Web if you want to use Extroid with Zoom.

Does Extroid work in OBS?

No. OBS needs a system-level camera device or virtual camera driver. Extroid does not install drivers.

Does Extroid work with Google Meet?

Yes. In a Chromium-based desktop browser, select Extroid Camera in Google Meet camera settings.

Why is Android recommended?

Android Chrome generally gives the most predictable mobile web camera behavior. iOS browser and PWA behavior can be more restrictive.

Does video go through the cloud?

Extroid uses cloud storage only for device pairing/signaling. Video is peer-to-peer when the network allows it.

Use your phone camera in browser calls

Add Extroid to Chrome, scan a QR code with your phone, and select Extroid Camerain a supported browser video call.
